Grace Marion Patterson (1899-1996) spent nearly 40 years as a Christian teacher under the Church of Scotland in Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Nepal.

Much of her time there - 1948-1959 - was as Principal of the Paljor Namgyal Girls' Senior Secondary School, Gangtok, Sikkim. Students called her "Miss Sahab".

She was friendly with members of the Government. She met Sir Edmund Hillary soon after he reached the summit of Mount Everest, and was possibly the only person in the world who could talk to both him and Sherpa Tensing in their own dialects.

Proposed biography

Cathy Allan (a daughter of Grace's niece Alison) and her husband, Alan Tait, visited the Paljor Namgyal Girls' Senior Secondary School in April 2008, bringing some photos and a television clip concerning Grace, for a gathering of "old PNGites". Cathy plans to write a book about Grace.

Grace's missionary aunt

Grace's aunt Helen C (Nellie) MacGregor (c 1864-1936) was the first Presbyterian missionary to go from New Zealand to India.
